Dedication of St. John Lateran

As we pray today for an increase of spiritual gifts, we are reminded by the bishops’ pastoral on stewardship that good stewardship of the Church “means cherishing and fostering the gifts of all, while using one’s own gifts to serve the community of faith.”

Eucharistic Adoration takes place in the Chapel from 7am-12 midnight every Friday.  Thank you for your prayers and participation in this ministry.

Thanksgiving Food Baskets

Thanksgiving Food Baskets will be distributed to families in need.  Please consider donating the following to help the pantry volunteers provide a Thanksgiving Dinner and one or two meals for “the least of my brothers”.

Items needed are:  turkeys, 5lb. bags of potatoes, stuffing, cranberries, vegetables, peanut butter, jelly, cereal, spaghetti sauce, juice, etc.

Items may be left in box in back of church except for turkeys.  Please donate turkeys no later than Friday, November 21.  Thank you

We would like to welcome to our parish community the following people who recently became members of St. Ambrose:  Amaechi & Chizorom Izeogu; Megan, Katlynn, Joanne & David Alix; Karen L. Ryan-McAuley; Ava, Jennifer & Michael Rocco; Anna Bodoh, Nicholas, Aiden & Elizabeth Vanderwarker.

Please remember in the charity of your prayers the repose of the souls of Mary J. Robitaille and all those who will be remembered in Masses this week.

Thanksgiving Dinner Ministry

Our last planning meeting will be held on Thursday, November 13 at 7PM in the parish lounge.  We will be finalizing the details of this event which will take place on the Saturday before Thanksgiving.  It’s not too late to sign up to help.  Volunteers are needed to cook turkeys, bake pies and desserts, and help on the day of the dinner.  Please call Fran 785-8763 or Rose Anne 783-6407 if you would like help.

Although this seems early, in order to plan for our Christmas Giving Tree Community-Outreach Project, much preparation and planning is needed before hand.

If you are aware of a person-family or agency that is in need of assistance with gifts for Christmas, please do the following things:

1.     Contact me as soon as possible at 785-1351 Ext. 304

2.     Please have the contact information such as name, address, phone number and wish list, including sizes.

The Angel-Giving Tree will go up in the Chapel on November 28th and all gifts must be returned by December 6th.

Santa’s helpers are needed for all aspects of the project such as sorting, delivering and collating.  If you have any time to give to this project, please call me.  The commitment is entirely up to you.  Please know any help is so appreciated.

Cathedral Anniversary Commemoration

Next Sunday, November 16 marks the 156th Anniversary of our Diocesan mother Church, the Cathedral of the Immaculate Conception.  Originally dedicated in 1852, Our Cathedral is the third oldest cathedral still in consecutive use in the United States.  Presently, it is slated for renovations (which have not been done in decades!) in the near future, God willing.  In addition to the regular Cathedral Masses (5:15 Sat. vigil, & 9:00, 11:00 & 5:00 p.m. Sun.) there will be a special 10:30 a.m. Choir Concert; and in the afternoon there will guided tours at 1:00 and 2:00 p.m.  Finally, at 3:00 p.m. there will be a special anniversary lecture presented by Fr. Gary Gelfenbien, pastor of St. James Church in Chatham on the gorgeous stained glass windows in the Cathedral.  All are cordially invited and welcome for this very special anniversary commemoration.  The Cathedral is located at the corner of Eagle and Madison Avenue in downtown Albany.

Visit to the ‘Holy Land’ ~ IRELAND!

Attention St. Ambrose parishioners:  You are warmly invited to join Fr. Tony as well as his friends Fr. Tim Donahue, from Augusta, GA and Msgr. Jim Barker, from Baltimore, MD on a glorious pilgrimage to the other holy land – Ireland - next Summer (Aug. 24 – Sept. 1, 2009).  This is a wonderful opportunity to visit the beautiful Emerald Isle and see some special places of interest and wonder, charm, legend and history, including Killarney, the Ring of Kerry, Dublin, Waterford, Glendalough and more!   Highlights include a visit to St. Kevin’s monastery, plus St. Patrick’s Cathedral in Dublin.  (FYI, my close friend Fr. Kevin Brooksbank from Baltimore was supposed to go on this trip, but due to his death last May 25, I have been invited to go in his place.)  Space and time are limited for this incredible travel opportunity!  I am confident that such a popular trip like this will likely sell out quickly, so act quickly.  Call Fr. Tony immediately for all the details.  This promises to be a most enjoyable and memorable trip.  Don’t miss out!  Be sure to get in on this exciting chance to visit Ireland, (along with 3 fun and funny priests – all who have Irish ancestry!)     Call 785-1351 NOW for information and to sign up.                                                Erin Go Bragh!

A Prayer for the Armed Forces

Almighty God, stretch forth your mighty arm to strengthen and protect the men and women of our Armed Forces.  As they face the myriad of challenges and decisions that each day is destined to bring, may they be anchored by their faith, protected by your presence and comforted by the knowledge that they are loved by you and by this community of faith.  Grant that, meeting danger with courage, and all occasions with discipline and loyalty, they may truly serve the cause of justice and peace to the honor of your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.
